Ciao Bambino weaves together themes of love, heartbreak, courage, cultural identity, and overcoming social and cultural barriers. If you were born outside of the United States or if you’ve ever researched your family history, you will be able to relate. Written by Dr. Elizabeth Allen Turner (STU Alum ’22, Director of Vocal Arts) and Dr. Andreas Häberlin (STU Alum ’24, Staff Accompanist) this story takes a look into parts of Turner’s own family history, echoing the immigrant experience, and adding a sprinkle of her own love life. Ciao Bambino transports you to the vibrant streets of 1940s New York City. A little peek, the story revolves around (Elizabetta), a courageous young Italian woman who arrives to New York City in the 1940s. Seeking a fresh start, she left her roots in Italy along with her devious ex-lover (Marcello). As she is starting new in her journey, she must overcome heartbreak and language barriers. Elizabetta finds herself working many jobs and redefines what it means to be Italian-American, stating it feels good to be Italian. She faces numerous challenges, the bustling cityscape, unfamiliar customs, and the longing for home. While working in her aunt’s and uncle’s (Zia and Zio) restaurant, she encounters a talented musician (Andy), igniting a romance that transcends borders. Elizabetta re-discovers her passion for music. As her story unfolds, readers and audiences will laugh, may cry, and cheer for her triumphs. We are reminded that, regardless of our origins, we all share the universal desire for connection and belonging. The story beautifully portrays the resilience of Italian immigrants during a transformative era. It celebrates the indomitable spirit of those who forge new paths, blending cultures and creating a legacy. And yes there is a happy ending. Ciao Bambino is both a book and a musical but started its life as only an “EP”. The music and lyrics were created by Elizabeth Turner and the orchestrations by her husband, Andreas Häberlin. Once it was made into a stage musical, Ciao Bambino made its debut off-off Broadway in 2018, at the former 13th Street repertory in NYC. In 2022, Ciao Bambino was selected out of hundreds of submissions for the Florida Festival of New Musicals at the Winterpark Playhouse, where it was praised as the “Best Show of the Festival” by Orlando Freeline Media. Last year, Ciao Bambino was performed at Gulf Coast State College where the musical received an Excellent rating and New Play Award by Florida State College Activities Association (FSCAA).
You can see Ciao Bambino at its upcoming limited run at the Manuel Artime Theater July 12th-14th. The Miami cast includes a very talented and diverse range of actors who come from different parts of the world, staying true to the story’s roots.
