St. Thomas University offers a variety of options when it comes to clubs and programs, music being one of them. The St. Thomas Music Program consists of three separate groups, Choir, Band, and Musical Theatre along with stage crew. Together, the music program comes to life and brings music to the students of STU. Anyone interested in joining STU’s Choir or Musical Theatre should contact Elizabeth Turner, Ed.D., as she is the director who runs the Choir as well as Musical Theatre. If anybody is interested in joining any of these programs, be sure to have your voice part, audition of your choice, and request ready, and it all can be done through stu.edu. Dr. Turner is accompanied by her pianist and husband Andreas Häberlin, M.M. An accomplished jazz pianist and pit orchestra musician. Anyone interested in joining the band should contact Chip Powell, the director of the Band. The choir has had many impressive performances this fall semester including the mass of Americas in the Epiphany Parish Churchnear Coral Gables. They also had a local fall concert at the new Student Union Lounge and an upcoming Christmas concert on December 1st. Moving on to the STU Musical Theatre, they have just completed their rendition of the iconic Little Shop of Horrors performance which ran from November 10th through November 12th. The stage crew, which is run by student Adam Perez-Pinon, with the supervision of Dr. Turner had worked very hard to produce a good-looking and functional set for the actors. When asked about the process of designing the set and working on the production in general, he stated, “Being that it is my second year designing sets I continue to find it fun and exciting. I start designing my sets by looking up the show, seeing other sets that have worked in the past, reading the script, watching the show, and checking out the theatre where the show will be held. Once I Figure out what show I’m working on and see who comes back to work with me we start working like a well-oiled machine, and the challenges begin. Working on Little Shop of Horrors was an amazing experience. I wanted to make the set as realistic as possible with the limitations of our venue and workspace. With the many limitations and issues that appeared in our process of building our set, we pushed through and had an amazing show. Funny enough our vice president, Nadine, is my stage manager. We both collaborated with the technical attributes of Little Shop and with the creation of the magazine. We bonded with the rest of our stage crew team, and we now feel like we can do anything." Last but surely not least is the Band. The STU Band has had its fair share of issues when it came to its director, luckily the role has been recently filled by Director Chip Powell, who is ready to accept new members as early as next semester. Remember that all these programs are open to all students and its members would love to have you. You can email him at [email protected] for more information
