by Nelia Pistana The island mistakes stillness for peace. It does not understand that a life without friction is a life that has never been tested. Everything here is untouched, which is another way of saying unproven.
This island is home, A place she has made her own. She is the everlasting haven. She has moved through her days, like time had chosen her. Stillness is her mercy. The island heals. She feeds, she clothes, she protects her loves, From the dangers beyond that still ocean. For a scratch of her questioned wisdom illuminates the night. The offer she makes: You can stay. The verdict made: You must stay. Her days are endless, Refusing to end. Quiet in approach, even the ocean forgets its roar, It whispers until you almost believe it was born silenced. You finally look at yourself, A gaping hole, No scars, No change, An image of a life not lived. The island, left with a vanishing body. Escaping her is hard but as she leaves your eyes, The sea begins to roar. Freedom is not gentle, but it gives back my name.

Should I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art the sun that shines on us all year, The light, the rays, the breeze, come what will may, I shall remain, for thou is what is dear. Thou are all that I have ever have known. I have walked down thy’s many different roads. I have seen your trees, your deadly cyclones, Your beautiful sea and humble abodes. I have talked with your people, new and old, I have swam with the dolphins once before, I have seen the sunset glimmering in gold. In my heart, there is something that I swore. This is my home, the place from whence I’m from, If I had to leave, I would “how come.” SUMMARY: On the night of September, 14th, 16-year-old Alexis "Lexi Carter, who had run away from home two weeks earlier, was found near the body of Eric Dalton, a 32-year-old man. Dalton was stabbed once in the chest behind an abandoned warehouse on Hudson Street. Police found Lexi hiding behind a dumpster approximately 40 feet from the scene, holding a backpack with a folding knife inside. She was immediately detained. The prosecution argues that Lexi intentionally killed Dalton during an argument. The defense argues that Lexi acted in self-defense, fearing for her life when Dalton cornered her and attempted to harm her. The case has no video footage. The trial relies heavily on witness testimony, forensic evidence, and credibility. Click the link to read the full Mock Trial Case review below
Medium: acrylic
A monochromatic acrylic painting on canvas using soft pink tones to portray a group of friends gathered together. The use of pink draws on color psychology, symbolizing warmth, comfort, and emotional openness, capturing the subtle connections shared within the group. Medium: woodburning
A still-life burned into wood — a depiction of the silence and distance within a family gathering. It captures the feeling of sitting apart from the noise, close enough to hear and see, yet still separate. Leaves loosen from its branches
like sacred secrets ready to be told, drifting down slowly in spirals, rust, gold, ember, a soft wildfire that never burns. The air simply sharpens as the days thin, slipping beneath collars, nipping softly at our skin like its reminding us that change is meant to be felt. Warm scents waft from open kitchens, cinnamon racing through the halls, apples browning in a simmering pot, mugs filled with hot chocolate that fogs windows from inside out. Porches glow from pumpkin light while the sky changes into copper and smoke. Fall settles around us like a woolen shawl, a quiet invitation to slow down and savor the season. College is a place we go to learn
to get our degrees and make what’s earned, but college isn’t all that pretty the drama that flows is truly thickening. We’re all broke and stuck in school, nothing to do but study and follow the rules. Running on caffeine, stress and fear, we pray the weekend gets us out of here. Assignments stack like towers tall, one slipup and the whole thing fall. We laugh, we cry, we barely can sleep, live with memories carved a little too deep. But somehow through the sleepless nights, the deadlines, and lonely frights, we’ll learn who we are– and who we’ll be. Because college will break us, shape us, and will finally set us free. There was once a girl,
simply trying to make end meets. She worked endlessly in the Miami heat. The girl traversed the world alone, no family to go to, no place to call home. But her disadvantages didn’t stop her, no, they motivated her. The girl did everything in her power to succeed while others thought she was too weak. The girl never stopped studying, hustling, and learning. Even though she was stressed, she had to do her best. Finally, she did it, she made ends meet. And when she reached the top of the world, all she could do was scream. |
