by Nelia Pistana The island mistakes stillness for peace. It does not understand that a life without friction is a life that has never been tested. Everything here is untouched, which is another way of saying unproven.
This island is home, A place she has made her own. She is the everlasting haven. She has moved through her days, like time had chosen her. Stillness is her mercy. The island heals. She feeds, she clothes, she protects her loves, From the dangers beyond that still ocean. For a scratch of her questioned wisdom illuminates the night. The offer she makes: You can stay. The verdict made: You must stay. Her days are endless, Refusing to end. Quiet in approach, even the ocean forgets its roar, It whispers until you almost believe it was born silenced. You finally look at yourself, A gaping hole, No scars, No change, An image of a life not lived. The island, left with a vanishing body. Escaping her is hard but as she leaves your eyes, The sea begins to roar. Freedom is not gentle, but it gives back my name.

Should I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art the sun that shines on us all year, The light, the rays, the breeze, come what will may, I shall remain, for thou is what is dear. Thou are all that I have ever have known. I have walked down thy’s many different roads. I have seen your trees, your deadly cyclones, Your beautiful sea and humble abodes. I have talked with your people, new and old, I have swam with the dolphins once before, I have seen the sunset glimmering in gold. In my heart, there is something that I swore. This is my home, the place from whence I’m from, If I had to leave, I would “how come.” SUMMARY: On the night of September, 14th, 16-year-old Alexis "Lexi Carter, who had run away from home two weeks earlier, was found near the body of Eric Dalton, a 32-year-old man. Dalton was stabbed once in the chest behind an abandoned warehouse on Hudson Street. Police found Lexi hiding behind a dumpster approximately 40 feet from the scene, holding a backpack with a folding knife inside. She was immediately detained. The prosecution argues that Lexi intentionally killed Dalton during an argument. The defense argues that Lexi acted in self-defense, fearing for her life when Dalton cornered her and attempted to harm her. The case has no video footage.
