STATE OF RIVERDALE v. ALEXIS “LEXI” CARTER

Charge: Second-Degree Murder
Age of Defendant: 16
Plea: Not Guilty
SUMMARY:
On the night of September, 14th, 16-year-old Alexis "Lexi Carter, who had run away from home two weeks earlier, was found near the body of Eric Dalton, a 32-year-old man. Dalton was stabbed once in the chest behind an abandoned warehouse on Hudson Street.

Police found Lexi hiding behind a dumpster approximately 40 feet from the scene, holding a backpack with a folding knife inside. She was immediately detained.

The prosecution argues that Lexi intentionally killed Dalton during an argument. The defense argues that Lexi acted in self-defense, fearing for her life when Dalton cornered her and attempted to harm her.

The case has no video footage. The trial relies heavily on witness testimony, forensic evidence, and credibility.

CHARGES:
Count 1: Second-Degree Murder
  • The defendant intentionally caused the death of another person
OR
  • The defendant acted with a depraved indifference to human life

Lesser-Included Option: Manslaughter (Defense may use this in closing)

WITNESSES

⸻

PROSECUTION WITNESSES:

1. Officer Maria Lopez – Arresting Officer
Key Points:
• Found Lexi hiding with a knife in her backpack
• Says Lexi was “shaking but coherent”
• Claims Lexi said: “I didn’t mean to do it, but he wouldn’t stop.”
(Defense will argue this was taken out of context)

2. Dr. Caleb Morgan – Medical Examiner
Key Points:
• Single stab wound, front of chest
• Direction of wound suggests the victim was facing the attacker
• No defensive wounds on victim
• No DNA on victim’s hands (suggests he wasn’t fighting back)
• Prosecution uses this to say it was not self-defense

3. Sandra Dalton – Victim’s Sister
Key Points:
• Testifies victim was “not violent”
• Character witness
• Admits she wasn’t present and doesn’t know what happened that night
• Defense may object to speculation

⸻

DEFENSE WITNESSES

1. Alexis “Lexi” Carter – Defendant
Key Points:
• Ran away from home due to physical abuse by mother’s boyfriend
• Was sleeping behind the warehouse for several nights
• Claims victim approached her twice before
• Night of incident:
• Says Eric Dalton followed her
• Grabbed her wrist
• Told her “Come with me, no one will miss you”
• She pulled out the knife in panic
• Claims she stabbed him while trying to escape
• Says she dropped the knife in her panic and ran

2. Jordan Miller – Homeless Teen, Defense Witness
Key Points:
• Says he saw Dalton “harassing Lexi” two days earlier
• Claims Dalton had a reputation for bothering young runaways
• Was 100 yards away on the night of the murder
• Saw shadows and heard a girl scream before the stabbing
• Prosecution will argue visibility was too low and Jordan is unreliable

3. Dr. Riley Chen – Trauma Psychologist & Expert Witness
Key Points:
• Can testify about fight-or-flight response
• Lexi’s background of abuse makes her more reactive to perceived danger
• Explains that panic can lead to a single defensive stab without further blows
• Supports the self-defense theory

 EVIDENCE (EXHIBITS)

⸻

Exhibit A – Folding Knife
• Found in Lexi’s backpack
• Her fingerprints on handle
• Victim’s blood on blade
• Legal length, commonly carried for self-protection by runaways

Exhibit B – Crime Scene Diagram
Shows:
• One narrow alley
• Only one exit
• Dumpster
• Where body, blood, and Lexi were found
Defense argument: Lexi was trapped
Prosecution: She could have run away earlier

Exhibit C – Text Messages from Lexi’s Phone

Messages from two days before incident:
“He keeps following me.”
“I’m scared.”
Defense uses this to show fear
Prosecution says it’s unclear who she meant

Exhibit D – Forensic Report
• No drugs/alcohol in victim
• Single stab wound
• No sign of prolonged struggle
• No defensive wounds
Defense will argue this supports a sudden, frantic self-defense stab, not murder

ARGUMENTS

⸻

PROSECUTION THEORY
• Lexi was angry, stressed, and lashed out
• She intentionally stabbed Dalton after an argument
• No injuries on Dalton show he did not attack her
• Victim was unarmed
• Lexi admitted: “I didn’t mean to do it, but he wouldn’t stop.”

Prosecution claims this proves guilt.

⸻

DEFENSE THEORY
• Lexi was a vulnerable runaway
• Dalton approached her in an isolated area
• She reasonably believed she was in danger
• Single stab wound = panic response
• Her text messages and Jordan’s testimony show she feared the victim
• Trauma expert shows her reaction was normal under threat

Defense argues full self-defense or at least manslaughter, not murder.

VERDICT OPTIONS

• Guilty of Second-Degree Murder
• Guilty of Manslaughter
• Not Guilty by Reason of Self-Defense

NOW MY EXPERIENCE:

I would say it was more of an informative discussion between the defender and prosecutors of course they are mainly arguing because of the case and with the facts. I would say an entertaining argument and it was a great experience.
